Erling Haaland appeared to confront Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly, making a foul-mouthed dig at the 17-year-old.

Haaland opened the scoring for Manchester City against the Gunners on Sunday. But he endured a frustrating afternoon after that early goal in the face of a staunch rearguard action from the 10-man visitors.

Following Leandro Trossard’s sending off for a second bookable offence, the Gunners camped out in their box. Haaland had several run-ins with the Arsenal defenders, including throwing a ball at Gabriel’s head following John Stones’ 98th minute equaliser.

Tensions came to a head in the moments following full-time as members from both sides became involved in something of a melee. Haaland was at the heart of things for City, with Lewis-Skelly surprisingly getting involved too.

The 17-year-old came on as a late substitute having earlier been booked by referee Michael Oliver for protests while sitting on the bench. After the final whistle, Haaland began arguing with Gabriel.

Lewis-Skelly moved in to break up the argument, which drew an angry response from Haaland. TV cameras showed the City striker turning to Lewis-Skelly and appearing to mouth ‘who the f*** are you?’ multiple times to the Arsenal starlet.

Ilkay Gundogan, Ben White and Jakub Kiwior all also became involved as they defended their team-mates. Eventually matters did calm down and the two teams departed the pitch for their dressing rooms.

Earlier, Haaland had been spotted throwing a ball at Arsenal defender Gabriel’s head after Stones’ equaliser at the death. The Norwegian was defended for his actions though, with Alan Shearer insisting it was harmless.

Speaking on Match of the Day 2, Shearer said: “I don’t think there was any harm in it. It was a really difficult game for the referee, but in terms of the aggression and the one v one battles, it was a fascinating game.”

City’s frustrations built up over the course of the second half as Arsenal deployed every tactic in the book to slow the pace of play down. The hosts frequently protested to Oliver about their opponents.

Boss Pep Guardiola though admitted he would have done the same thing as opposite number Arteta. He said: “Maybe I would have done the same because it is with ten men. You have to ask Mikel [Arteta] what the tactic was.

“They were good with the long balls into Kai Havertz who is so strong and they go for the second balls. In the end we were patient, had the chances and got the goal. That’s all.”
